Devoted Health OTC Benefit: How the Over-the-Counter Allowance Works

Updated June 4, 20266 min readReviewed against medicare.gov

The Devoted Health OTC (over-the-counter) benefit is a quarterly allowance that members on eligible Devoted Medicare Advantage plans can use to buy approved health products like pain relievers, allergy medicine, vitamins, toothpaste, sunscreen, and blood pressure cuffs. You can spend it all at once or in several smaller purchases, but unused money does not roll over — it is forfeited at the end of each quarter (new quarters start in January, April, July, and October). The exact dollar amount varies by plan, so you must check your plan's Summary of Benefits to confirm whether your plan includes the benefit and how much you get. This is a Medicare Advantage supplemental benefit; Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover OTC items.

What the Devoted Health OTC benefit is and how it works

The Devoted Health OTC benefit is a quarterly allowance built into some of Devoted's Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans. "OTC" stands for over-the-counter — the everyday health products you can buy without a prescription. Each quarter, eligible members get a set dollar amount they can spend on approved items.

You have flexibility in how you spend it. You can use the full quarterly allowance in a single trip, or break it up into several smaller purchases throughout the quarter — whatever is more convenient for you.

Keep in mind this is a plan benefit, not a feature of Original Medicare. Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not pay for over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, or other non-prescription health items. An OTC allowance like this one is a supplemental benefit that only some Medicare Advantage plans choose to offer.

How much you get, when quarters reset, and rollover rules

The OTC allowance amount is not the same for every plan — it is set by your specific Devoted plan. To find your exact dollar amount, and to confirm your plan even includes this benefit, look at your plan's Summary of Benefits or your "Your Guide to Care" booklet.

The allowance does not roll over. Any money you do not spend by the last day of the quarter is forfeited — it does not carry into the next quarter. Because of that, it helps to plan your purchases before each quarter ends.

  • New quarters begin in January, April, July, and October.
  • Unused funds at the end of a quarter are lost — there is no rollover.
  • You can spend the allowance all at once or across multiple smaller purchases.
  • The dollar amount is plan-specific; verify it in your Summary of Benefits.

What you can buy — and what happens if you go over

The benefit is meant for common over-the-counter health and wellness products. Devoted lists examples such as OTC medications, vitamins, sunscreen, toothpaste, and other everyday health items.

If your purchase costs more than your remaining allowance, you are responsible for paying the difference. The allowance covers eligible items up to your balance; anything above that comes out of your own pocket.

  • Allergy medications
  • Pain relievers
  • Vitamins
  • Toothpaste
  • Sunscreen
  • Blood pressure cuffs
  • Any amount you spend above your allowance is paid by you.

Where and how to use your OTC benefit

You can use the Devoted OTC benefit in three ways: in store, online, or by phone. To use it in store, simply present your Devoted Health member ID card at checkout — there is no separate OTC card to carry. Devoted notes that in-store shelf prices may not match the catalog price, and members always pay the catalog price.

You can also order online at CVS.com or by phone at 1-833-287-0312 (TTY 711), Monday through Friday, 8am to 8pm (Hawaii hours differ). Mail orders ship free and typically arrive in 5 to 7 days (up to 21 days for Hawaii).

  • In store: usable at standalone CVS, Navarro, or Longs Drug stores that have a pharmacy.
  • It cannot be used at CVS locations inside Target or inside Schnucks.
  • Online: place orders at CVS.com.
  • By phone: 1-833-287-0312 (TTY 711), Mon-Fri, 8am-8pm.
  • At checkout in store, show your Devoted Health member ID card — no separate card needed.
  • You always pay the catalog price, not the in-store shelf price.

OTC card vs. the Devoted Food & Home card

Devoted's OTC benefit is different from its Food & Home card, and the two should not be confused. The OTC allowance is a quarterly benefit for over-the-counter health products.

The Food & Home card is a separate, monthly allowance available only to members with certain chronic conditions — such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart problems, or stroke — who meet their plan's criteria. Not every member qualifies for the Food & Home card, even if they have the OTC benefit. Check your plan documents to see which benefits apply to you.

How to confirm your benefit and compare plans

Because OTC details vary by plan, the most reliable way to know what you have is to read your own plan paperwork. Your Summary of Benefits and "Your Guide to Care" booklet spell out whether your plan includes the OTC benefit, your quarterly dollar amount, and how to check your remaining balance. You can also call Devoted member services for help confirming your balance.

If you are shopping for coverage and an OTC allowance matters to you, remember that supplemental benefits like this differ from plan to plan and from company to company. You can compare Medicare Advantage plans — including their supplemental benefits — side by side for your ZIP code using the official Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov/plan-compare. Devoted Health is a private insurance company; it is not part of the government Medicare program.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Devoted OTC allowance monthly or quarterly?

It is quarterly. You receive a set allowance each quarter, with new quarters starting in January, April, July, and October. (Devoted's separate Food & Home card, for members with qualifying chronic conditions, is a monthly allowance.)

Does my unused OTC money roll over to the next quarter?

No. Any allowance you do not use by the end of the quarter is forfeited and does not carry over. Try to use your balance before each quarter ends.

Do I need a separate OTC card to use the benefit?

No. To use the benefit in store, you present your Devoted Health member ID card at checkout. You can also order online at CVS.com or by phone at 1-833-287-0312 (TTY 711), Monday-Friday, 8am-8pm.

Can I use my Devoted OTC benefit at a CVS inside Target?

No. The benefit can be used at standalone CVS, Navarro, or Longs Drug stores that have a pharmacy, but it cannot be used at CVS locations inside Target or Schnucks.

Does every Devoted Health plan include the OTC benefit?

Not necessarily. The OTC benefit and its dollar amount vary by plan. Check your plan's Summary of Benefits or 'Your Guide to Care' booklet to confirm whether your plan includes it and how much you get.

What happens if I spend more than my OTC allowance?

You pay the difference. The allowance covers eligible items up to your remaining balance; any amount above that is your responsibility.
